THEME: THE RURUTU PEOPLE COMMUNITY LIFE THROUGH THE « UMU’AI »
The Protestant pastor POETAI Teriimana established the Umua’ai ceremony in 1936 with the aim of bringing together rural families to talk about genealogy.
Umua’ai is a holiday where a couple showcases their children by offering them an extra ceremony after their civil and religious wedding.
Its unfolding obeys a very precise ritual. Official gifts are to be given to couples, and family ties are recited.
Each stage is organized in groups, in family and in a collective way, from the preparations to the festivities.
All families and the people mobilise and join their efforts to make this ceremony a success!
Umua’ai has become a cultural act but also an act of community sharing, specific to the island of Rurutu.
