TAMARI’I MANOTAHI

SINGING – TĀRAVA RAROMATA’I

THEME: THE LEGEND OF PUNA NUI AND PUNA ITI

The theme of Tamarii Manotahi this year is the sequel of of the story of Puna, whom was attached and burned.  Following this event, the twin brothers PUNA NUI and PUNA ITI elaborated their plans to steal the « PÛ » (conches) of the king hanging on the « Ahu » of the Marae Atehuru to seek revenge for the death of their older brother.

The Marae is inaccessible without authorization from the Tahu’a and the king, it is guarded 24/7 by the guards of the king.

However, during their stay in the valley of Matati’a, PUNA NUI and PUNA ITI went over their plan to go to the Marae and to grab the « Pû » hanging on the « Ahu » without being seen.  During the night when the guards went to sleep, they approached the Marae.  Since the « Ahu » is quite tall, one of the twins climbed on the shoulders of the other to reach the « Pû » before sprinting and not getting caught.  When the sun rose, the guards woke up with astonishment: the « Pû » had disappeared.  They announced the bad news to the king and asked the entire population who had stolen his « Pû ».
