HEIVA RIMA’I : 30 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
The Heiva Rima’i celebrates 30 years of existence with its fervor intact. As the emblematic event for arts and crafts in French Polynesia, this trade fair shows off the excellence of our craftspeople and the thousand ways it expresses itself. More than a hundred craftspeople will come together around the theme 30 years of Heiva Rima’i, Te toru ahururaa o te matahiti Heiva a te Rima’i. The entire range of Polynesian know-how will be on display for the occasion : wood, stone or bone sculpture, tifaifai, weaving, basketwork, fashion… Free introductory workshops will be held for the public every day from 9 am to 5 pm, on how to make a baby tifaifai and applique or patchwork pillowcases.
This year’s contests will be challenges to create large hats, Victorian-style Pomare dresses, and a star-shaped carpet. Artisans will also compete for best booth decoration throughout the fair, combining tradition and modernity. Activities, demos and tastings from different archipelagos will take place every Saturday (food, crafts, music, dance, fashion shows…).
The actual 30th anniversary of the Heiva Rima’i will take place on Friday 18 July, and all the event’s organizers throughout the years will come together for a local style “Kaina Party.”
